Emergency Agencies in Your State

The Department of Homeland Security has posted a handy page that lets you click on one of the 50 states of your interest and brings up a list of resources located within that state that can provide aid during a time of emergency.

This website also provides information about where Citizen Corps locations can be found in each state. Citizen Corps is a grassroots effort to help localize preparedness messages and train civilians assist first responders in their area during a time of emergency and the recovery process.

Recovering After a Disaster

Disasters come at you fast. But then what? Natural events a lot of times happen quickly and unexpectedly and can leave you wondering how to pick up the pieces when you have barely had time to think.

The Institute for Business & Home Safety has posted some tips about how to recover from a disastrous event and make your way home. These tips can help one begin the process of getting back to “normal”:

  • Report the loss to your insurance company ASAP.
  • Enter buildings that may have been damaged with care.
  • Take measures to further protect your property.
  • Prepare a list of the items that were damaged in your home. Take pictures of the damage or even video.
  • Keep records of all your expenses during the recovery process.
  • Fill and return claim forms promptly.
  • Add additional safety features to your home, if necessary.
  • Ask your insurance agent the right questions before the unexpected happens. Ask your claim adjuster even more questions when worst comes true.

The Rockies and Plains Get Hit

StormAs a storm exists the western part of the U.S., the states in the Rockies and central states brace to be hit on Monday. Read the full report from The Weather Channel here.

Two to three feet of snow is expected over the mountain ranges as eastern Colorado and New Mexico brace for severe thunderstorms. Hail and strong winds could even be seen in these areas.

The pressure created by the storm could produce Santa Ana winds in California that will make the fire danger even more high. The humidity levels are expected to be very low in the mountain passes, valleys and canyons.

Those in the western states will experience temperatures that are 10-30 degrees lower than average.

Many recovery services will be on call during the week as many states prepare for wet weather, high winds, and potential fires.
