South Boston residents still cleaning after flood

Unexpectedly high rainfall caused water damage to businesses in the Riverdale -area of South Boston, Virginia.

As the banks of the Dan River rose, business owner held their breath. Some businesses reported to have up to 12″ of water, others close to 30″. WSET.com reports that some owners felt lucky that they planned ahead for the flooding, while others are hoping the mud and waters did not permanently ruin their electronic equipment. Halifax County Emergency Services are assisting business owners with surveying the damage.

There are the have and have-nots in the business world: those that have prepared, and those that have not and wish they did. Those who run enterprises, big or small, need to be ready for the worst when it comes to disaster preparedness. Check out these tips on how to be prepared for a flood.

Residents of North Dakota Fear Levee Break

The latest blow to North Dakota, after residents have scrambled to protect their homes and business from rising flood waters, are continued winter storms. The snow that has fallen could raise the levels of the rising rivers once it has melted.

The freezing temperatures, along with 30 mph winds, are weakening the levees that are holding the waters that are now well above flood-stage. Chunks of ice that have frozen in the river could hit the levees as they flow with the currents.

Engineers have recently discovered a crack in the dikes that they have been monitoring around the clock. The crack discovered has been checked-on every 15 minutes for significant weaknesses that could flood the city of Fargo. If this crack has grown, officials are prepared to call in the Army Corps of Engineers to evacuate the city. Corps officials are ready in a nearby parking lot.
