Disaster Awareness Week

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Residents of New Zealand will be practicing emergency preparedness next week during Disaster Awarenss Week, which starts on October 5, 2008.

During this week, residents are reminded about the need to be ready for when a disaster may occur. Many regions in New Zealand experienced massive flooding and strong winds that caused many residents to evacuate their homes. Disaster recovery will last for many months.

Other natural disaster this country experiences include earthquakes and tsunamis. The city of Wellington has purchased an emergency broadcast system purchased from the United States that will make the public aware of what to do when an emergency situation arises. During Disaster Awareness Week, this new public-address system will be used to run drills so the public becomes familiar with the sounds of the siren and the messages they may hear afterward.
