Recent Fatal Fire at a Senior Center was Preventable
The Bellaire Independent Senior Apartments in Riverview, Michigan suffered losses Thursday night in a fire that was preventable. One man was killed and many other were injured in this incident that was caused by a “careless smoker”. These damages could have been avoided if a sprinkler system was installed in the building.
However, the complex is not licensed as a senior living home and, therefore, is not required to install sprinklers.
The Detroit News spoke to Riverview Fire Chief, Timothy Bosman, and reported:
“‘If that would have been a sprinkled building there wouldn’t have been a loss of life…There was not any type of (senior living) licensing for this building. There will be changes in the future.’ Administrators gathered behind closed doors this morning to discuss what’s next for the private community of $1,400-plus a month studio and one-bedroom apartments.”
