The Eagle River Library in Eagle River, Alaska has had to close the doors to its new building as a leaky pipe caused extensive water damage. The library’s website states:

“Chugiak-Eagle River Branch Library is closed until further notice due to flooding. The Saturday, October 24th, 2pm Mad Science program will still be held in the Community Room.

The Anchorage Public Library’s old website is still available, for now, at lexicon.ci.anchorage.ak.us.

Cleaning Up

Water  damage restoration crews have come into the building with fans and water vacuums to help dry the building and the contents that got soaked, which include the carpets and sheet rock. The cause of the flooding is a water line that was loose. Officials, however, are not sure why the waterline would be loose since the library is in a brand new building that opened at the end of the summer.

On the upside: only 3 books sustained water damage.

When talking about the intended water remediation plans, facility manager Bill Fowler stated in an interview to KATUU:

“We’ll be taking down the rubber baseboard molding area so we can get fans to it to get it dry because sheetrock will wick water up in it and then it can be a mold problem again in the future.”
